The 327 Federal was launched at the 2008 SHOT Show by Federal and Ruger. It is based on the 32 H&R case lengthened by 0.125” to 1.20”. The .32 H&R Magnum was launched in 1984 and although on par with the .38 Special +P loads, did not achieve the popularity hoped for. The .327 Federal sought to change that and is loaded to a pressure of 45,000psi (as opposed to 36,000 for the 44 Magnum) and matches the 357 Magnum in speed and power, but with less recoil and giving the option of fitting 7 rounds in the cylinder as Ruger did with their GP100. As with the 32 H&R, the 327 did not achieve the popularity Ruger and Federal hoped for.
