This was another design (together with the Lipfire and Thuer ideas) to circumvent the Rollin White patent held by Smith & Wesson. The cupfire front-loading system was designed by Willard Ellis and John White from Springfield and was offered in three different calibers, namely .28, .30 and .44 although the cupfire system is measured on the base diameter and not the bullet diameter. The headstamp on this specimen was by Phoenix Metallic Cartridge Co.
