In his article, Winchester’s “Forgotten” Cartridges, 1866-1900 by Paul Foster he gives a fascinating insight on the early developmental work that was done by Winchester in cartridge development. It was during the mid 1890’s that interest was shown in .25cal. cartridges and the 25 -30 Winchester was one of the experimentals that was done by Winchester for single shot rifles but was never put into production.
