The Model 1896 Bergmann No. 2, 3 and 4 was in improvement from the original Model 1894 Bergmann-Schmeisser design. The No.2 and 3 were designed as pocket pistols, (No.2 in 5mm and the No.3 in 6,5mm) and still retained the rimless, grooveless design initially, but later changed to include an extractor groove, because of feeding and ejection problems. The No.4 was designed for the larger 8mm cartridge, and although Bergmann had in mind to market it as a military pistol, the military at that stage was not interested in letting go of their trusted revolvers. (Erlmeier, Brandt Ref. 82).
